Chapters On Zuhd

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

"Seek refuge in Allah from the Pit of Sorrows." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the Pit of Sorrows?" He said: "gorge in Hell from which Hell seeks Allah's refuge a Hundred times every day." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! Who shall enter it?" He said: "The reciters who were showing off with their deeds."
Narrated by Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:

Context

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warns against the dangers of hypocrisy, specifically among those who recite the Quran but do so to show off rather than for sincere worship. He describes a terrifying place in Hell called the Pit of Sorrows, which serves as a reminder of the consequences of insincerity in one's actions. This hadith emphasizes the importance of genuine faith and the peril of seeking recognition through religious deeds.

Modern Application

In today's world, this principle encourages individuals to engage in acts of worship and good deeds with sincerity, rather than for the sake of appearance or social approval. It serves as a reminder to reflect on our intentions and ensure they align with our actions, fostering a deeper connection to faith.

Topics

This hadith is tagged with Day of Judgment and Warning because it highlights the consequences of insincerity in worship and the severe warning of Hell for those who show off their deeds.

O Messenger, let them not grieve you who hasten into disbelief of those who say, "We believe" with their mouths, but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. But he for whom Allah intends fitnah - never will you possess [power to do] for him a thing against Allah. Those are the ones for whom Allah does not intend to purify their hearts.
