Mishkat al-Masabih #1856
Zakat
The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.
وَعَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ أَنْ تُشْبِعَ كَبِدًا جَائِعًا» . رَوَاهُ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ فِي شُعَبِ الْإِيمَانِ
He reported God’s messenger as saying, “The most excellent sadaqa consists in your satisfying a hungry stomach.”*
Baihaqi transmitted it in Shu’ab al-iman.
* Literally “liver.”
