Mishkat al-Masabih #3027
Marriage
The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.
وَعَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ الْجُمَحِيِّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:
" فَصَلَ مَا بَيْنَ الْحَلَالِ وَالْحَرَامِ: الصَّوْتُ وَالدُّفُّ فِي النِّكَاحِ ". رَوَاهُ أَحْمد وَالتِّرْمِذِيّ وَالنَّسَائِيّ وَابْن مَاجَه
Muhammad b. Hatib al-Jumahi reported the Prophet as saying, “The distinction between what is lawful and what is unlawful is the song and the tambourine at a wedding.”
Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
