Mishkat al-Masabih #485
Purification
The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.
وَعَن الْمُغيرَة بن شُعْبَة قَالَ: مَسَحَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نسيت؟ قَالَ: بل أَنْت نسيت بِهَذَا أَمرنِي رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ. رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ
Al-Mughira said: God’s messenger wiped over the shoes and I said, “Messenger of God, you have forgotten.” He replied, “No, you have forgotten. My Lord commanded me to do this.”
Ahmad and Abu Dawud transmitted it.
