Sahih Muslim #5136

The Book of Drinks
Sahih

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

This hadith has been reported from Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters, but he also said that Ikhtinath means that its head (i. e., of the waterskin) be turned upside down and then (water) be drank from that.

Context

This hadith discusses the practice of drinking water from a waterskin, specifically mentioning the method of Ikhtinath, which involves turning the head of the waterskin upside down before drinking. This practice highlights the importance of cleanliness and proper etiquette in consuming beverages, reflecting the care that should be taken in daily habits.

Modern Application

In modern life, this principle can be seen in the emphasis on hygiene and etiquette during meals. For instance, using clean utensils and ensuring that food and drink are prepared in a sanitary manner are practices that resonate with the teachings of this hadith.
