Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah)
Da'if

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

Ibrahim bin Maisarah reported from his maternal aunt who reported on the authority of a woman called Mussaddaqah (a truthful woman). She said “In pre Islamic days, when my father participated in a battle the feet of the people burnt due to intense heat. Thereupon a man said “Who gives me his shoes, I shall marry him to my first daughter born to me. My father took off his shoes and there them before him. A girl was thereafter born to him and came of age.” The narrator then mentioned a similar story. But he did not mention that she had grown old.

Context

This hadith recounts an incident from the pre-Islamic era where a man, in dire circumstances during a battle, offered to marry his firstborn daughter in exchange for a pair of shoes. The act of giving away the shoes highlights the lengths to which people would go to support one another in times of need, showcasing the importance of community and familial bonds.

Modern Application

In today's world, this principle of sacrifice for the sake of family and community can be seen in various forms, such as individuals supporting each other during crises or helping those in need. It emphasizes the value of generosity and the bonds that tie people together.

Topics

This hadith is tagged with Marriage and Community because it illustrates a unique marriage proposal rooted in a communal act of generosity during a time of hardship.
