The Book of Leading the Prayer (Al-Imamah)

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

أَخْبَرَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنِ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنِّي لأَقُومُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَأَسْمَعُ بُكَاءَ الصَّبِيِّ فَأُوجِزُ فِي صَلاَتِي كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمِّهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏
"I stand in prayer, then I hear a child crying, so I make my prayer brief, because I do not want to cause hardship for his mother."
Narrated by It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah, from his father that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

Context

Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) would shorten his prayer upon hearing a child cry, out of compassion for the child's mother. This illustrates the Prophet's (ﷺ) sensitivity to the needs of others and his understanding of family dynamics.

Modern Application

In daily salah, this principle encourages individuals to be considerate of others' situations. For instance, if someone is in a hurry or has a child with them, it is thoughtful to adjust the length of the prayer accordingly.

And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims."
