Sahih

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade standing up before the food had been cleared away.

Context

In this hadith, narrated by ‘Aishah, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasizes the importance of not standing up before the food has been cleared away. This reflects a broader theme of respect and consideration during meals, highlighting the significance of completing the dining experience before moving on to other activities. The takeaway is to cultivate patience and mindfulness during communal meals.

Modern Application

In today's fast-paced world, this principle encourages us to be present during meals, fostering deeper connections with family and friends. By waiting until everyone has finished eating before leaving the table, we can enhance our dining experiences and show respect for those we share meals with.

Topics

This hadith is tagged with Eating Etiquette and Prophetic Etiquette because it illustrates the proper behavior expected during meals as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allah or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allah an enormity.
