The ones whom the angels take in death [while] wronging themselves, and [who] then offer submission, [saying], "We were not doing any evil." But, yes! Indeed, Allah is Knowing of what you used to do.
Tafsir
Scholars offer complementary perspectives
those whom the angels take in death read feminine person tatawaffāhum or masculine yatawaffāhum while they are wronging themselves’ through disbelief. Then they will offer submission becoming compliant and submitting themselves to belief in God upon death saying ‘We were not doing any evil’ any associating others with God whereat the angels say ‘Nay! Surely God is Knower of what you used to do’ and will requite you for it.

“Angels
come to the dying person, and if the man was righteous, they
say:
‘Come out, O good soul that was in a good body, come out
praiseworthy and receive glad tidings of mercy and fragrance and a
Lord Who is not angry.’ And this is repeated until it comes out,
then
it is taken up to heaven, and it is opened for it, and it is
asked:
‘Who is this?’ They say: ‘So-and-so.’ It is said:
‘Welcome to the good
soul that was in a good body. Enter
praiseworthy and receive the glad
tidings of mercy and fragrance and
a Lord Who is not angry.’ And this
is repeated until it is brought
to the heaven above which is Allah.
But if the man was evil, they
say: ‘Come out O evil soul that was in
an evil body. Come out
blameworthy, and receive the tidings of boiling
water and the
discharge of dirty wounds,’ and other torments of
similar kind, all
together. And this is repeated until it comes out,
then it is taken
up to heaven and it is not opened for it. And it is
asked: ‘Who is
this?’ It is said: ‘So-and-so.’ And it is said: ‘No
welcome
to the evil soul that was in an evil body. Go back
blameworthy, for
the gates of heaven will not be opened to you.’ So it
is sent back
down from heaven, then it goes to the grave.”
"When the believer is dying, the angels of mercy come to him with white silk and sya: 'Come out content and with the pleasure of Allah upon you to the mercy of Allah, fragrance and a Lord Who is not angry; So it comes out like the best fragrance of musk. They pass him from one to another until they bring him to the gate of heaven, where they say: '; How good is this fragrance that has come to you from the Earth! Then the souls of the believers come to him and they rejoice more over him than any one of you rejoices when his absent loved one comes to him. They ask him: 'What happened to so-and-so, what happened to so-and-so?' They say: 'Let him be, for he was in the hardship of the world. When he says, 'Did he not come here?' They say: 'He was taken to the pit (of Hell).' Come out discontent, subject of Divine wrath, to the punishment of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime; So it comes out like the foulest stench of a corpse. They bring him to the gates of the Earth, where they say: 'How foul is this stench!' Then they bring him to the souls of the disbelievers."
An army unit was being recruited from the people of Medina and my name was written among them.
Then I met `Ikrima, and when I informed him about it, he discouraged me very strongly and said, "Ibn
`Abbas told me that there were some Muslims who were with the pagans to increase their number
against Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (and the Muslim army) so arrows (from the Muslim army) would hit one of
them and kill him or a Muslim would strike him (with his sword) and kill him. So Allah revealed:--
'Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (by staying
among the disbelievers).' (4.97)
The people of Medina were forced to prepare an army (to fight against the people of Sham during the
caliphate of `Abdullah bin Az-Zubair at Mecca), and I was enlisted in it; Then I met `Ikrima, the freed
slave of Ibn `Abbas, and informed him (about it), and he forbade me strongly to do so (i.e. to enlist in
that army), and then said, "Ibn `Abbas informed me that some Muslim people were with the pagans,
increasing the number of the pagans against Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). An arrow used to be shot which would
hit one of them (the Muslims in the company of the pagans) and kill him, or he would be struck and
killed (with a sword)." Then Allah revealed:--
"Verily! as for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (by staying
among the disbelievers)" (4.97) Abu AlAswad also narrated it.
There is no chance for repentance for you. He killed the monk also and then began to make an inquiry and moved from one village to another village where there lived pious persons, and as he had covered some distance, he was overtaken by death, but he managed to crawl upon his chest (to the side nearer to the place where the pious men lived). He died and then there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment and (when it was measured) he was found to be nearer to the village where pious persons were living equal to the Space of a span and he was thus included among them.
