فَإِن لَّمْ تَجِدُوا۟ فِيهَآ أَحَدًۭا فَلَا تَدْخُلُوهَا حَتَّىٰ يُؤْذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ وَإِن قِيلَ لَكُمُ ٱرْجِعُوا۟ فَٱرْجِعُوا۟ ۖ هُوَ أَزْكَىٰ لَكُمْ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌۭ
Fa il lam tajidoo feehaaa ahadan falaa tadkhuloohaa hattaa yu'zana lakum wa in qeela lakumurji'oo farji'oo huwa azkaa lakum; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona 'Aleem
And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.
Tafsir
Scholars largely agree on this ayah
And if you do not find anyone in them to give you permission still do not enter them until permission has been given to you. And if it is said to you when you are seeking permission ‘Go away’ then go away for this going away is purer that is better for you than sitting and waiting at the doorstep. And God knows what you do whether you enter with permission or without it and He will requite you for it.
Related Hadiths
In the Pre-lslamic Period when the people assumed Ihram, they would enter their houses from the
back. So Allah revealed:--
"And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from the back, but the righteous man is he who fears
Allah, obeys His Orders and keeps away from what He has forbidden. So enter houses through their
doors." (2.189)
Do not enter but weepingly (the habitations) of these people who had been punished by (Allah), and in case you do not feel inclined to weep, then do not enter (these habitations) that you may not meet the same calamity as had fallen to their lot.
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do not enter the ruined dwellings of those who were unjust to themselves
unless (you enter) weeping, lest you should suffer the same punishment as was inflicted upon them."
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do not enter (the places) of these people where Allah's punishment had fallen
unless you do so weeping. If you do not weep, do not enter (the places of these people) because
Allah's curse and punishment which fell upon them may fall upon you."
"Why did you go back?" He said: "I asked permission to enter three times, as the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) enjoined upon us, then if we are given permission we should enter, otherwise we should go back." He said: "You should bring me proof of that, or else!" Then he came to a gathering of his people and asked them to swear by Allah concerning that, and they did so, so he let him go."

ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَصَٰبَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌۭ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."
لِّلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَإِن تُبْدُوا۟ مَا فِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَوْ تُخْفُوهُ يُحَاسِبْكُم بِهِ ٱللَّهُ ۖ فَيَغْفِرُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌ
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.
ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ وَٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ وَٱلْقَٰنِتِينَ وَٱلْمُنفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ بِٱلْأَسْحَارِ
The patient, the true, the obedient, those who spend [in the way of Allah], and those who seek forgiveness before dawn.
