سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍۢ وَثَمَٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًۭا فَتَرَى ٱلْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍۢ
Sakhkharahaa 'alaihim sab'a la yaalinw wa samaaniyata ayyaamin husooman fataral qawma feehaa sar'aa ka annahum a'jaazu nakhlin khaawiyah
Which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.

He forced it upon them for seven nights and eight days the first of which was the morning of Wednesday eight days before the end of the month of Shawwāl and this was at the height of winter successively one after the next husūman it the action of the wind is likened to the repeated actions of a hāsim ‘one cauterizing a wound’ time and again until it the blood has been cut off inhsama so that you might have seen the people therein lying prostrate lying dead on the ground as if they were the hollow collapsed trunks of palm-trees.

If you live for a time, you would certainly see people get up (in the morning) in the wrath of Allah and getting into the evening under the curse of Allah, and there would be in their hands (whips) like the tail of an ox.
I came upon `Abdullah and he said, "When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) invited Quraish (to Islam), they
disbelieved him and stood against him. So he (the Prophet) said, "O Allah! Help me against them by
afflicting them with seven years of famine similar to the seven years of Joseph.' So they were stricken
with a year of drought that destroyed everything, and they started eating dead animals, and if one of
them got up he would see something like smoke between him and the sky from the severe fatigue and
hunger." `Abdullah then recited:--
'Then watch you for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke plainly visible, covering the
people. This is a painful torment... (till he reached) ........ We shall indeed remove the punishment for a
while, but truly you will revert (to heathenism): (44.10-15) `Abdullah added: "Will the punishment be
removed from them on the Day of Resurrection?" He added," The severe grasp" was the Day of the
Battle of Badr."
If you survive for a time you would certainly see people who would have whips in their hands like the tail of an ox. They would get up in the morning under the wrath of Allah and they would get into the evening with the anger of Allah.
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had the date-palm trees of Bani Al-Nadir burnt and cut down at a place called Al-
Buwaira. Allah then revealed: "What you cut down of the date-palm trees (of the enemy) Or you left
them standing on their stems. It was by Allah's Permission." (59.5)
“Habib bin Abi Amrah narrated to us, from Sa’eed bin Jubair, from Ibn Abbas, regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime: What you cut down of the Linah, or you left of them standing on their trunks – he said: ‘The Linah is the date-palms.’ That He might disgrace the rebellious. He said: ‘They were forced from their forts.’ And they were ordered to cut down the date-pals, that caused some hesitation in their chests, so the Muslims said: “We cut some of them, and we left some of them, so let us ask the Messenger of Allah is we are to be rewarded for those that we cut down, and if we will be burdened for what we left?” So Allah revealed the Ayah: What you cut down of the Linah, or you left of them standing on their trunks.”
