Tafsir Al-Jalalayn: Al-Ankaboot, Ayah 6

Al-Ankaboot · Ayah 6 · View Ayah
وَمَن جَٰهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَٰهِدُ لِنَفْسِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَنِىٌّ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.

Al-Jalalayn Commentary

And whoever struggles in war or against the temptations of his own soul struggles only for his own sake because the benefits to be reaped from his struggle will be for his sake and not for God’s. For truly God is Independent of the creatures of all the Worlds mankind jinn and angels and He is also without need of their worship.

It was then revealed about 'Ali and his two fellow companions and the boasting they had uttered: (And whosoever striveth) in the way of Allah on the Day of Badr, (striveth only for himself) he has the reward of that, (for lo! Allah is altogether Independent of (His) creatures) He is free of need for the striving of His creatures.
