Tafsir Al-Jalalayn: Al-Balad, Ayah 4
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ
We have certainly created man into hardship.

(We verily have created man) i.e. Kildah Ibn Usayd (in an atmosphere) in an erect form; it is also said that this means: in strife with the matter of the life of this world and of the Hereafter; and it is also said this means: with strength and force:

We certainly created man al-insān the generic noun in travail in a state of toil and hardship struggling with the tribulations of this world and the calamities of the Hereafter.
