Tafsir Ibn Abbas: Maryam, Ayah 81
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةًۭ لِّيَكُونُوا۟ لَهُمْ عِزًّۭا
And they have taken besides Allah [false] deities that they would be for them [a source of] honor.

Scholars offer complementary perspectives
And they namely the disbelievers of Mecca have taken besides God graven images as other gods for them to worship that they may be for them a source of might that they may be intercessors before God so that they will not be chastised.
Ibn Abbas Commentary
(And they have chosen (other)) the people of Mecca worshipped (gods beside Allah) i.e. idols (that they may be a power for them) that they be a protection for them from Allah's chastisement.
