Tafsir Ibn Abbas: As-Saaffaat, Ayah 142
فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌۭ
Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.

Scholars offer diverse perspectives
Then the whale swallowed him while he was blameworthy that is while he was guilty of a blameworthy thing having gone to sea and embarked the ship without his Lord’s permission.

Narrated by Jabir b. Abdullah reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent an expedition to the sea coast and I was one among them. The rest of the hadith is the same with a slight variation of wording that in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Wahb b. Kaisan (the words are):

Narrated by Ibn ‘Uqail reported this tradition with a slight change of wording. In his tradition he said:
