Tafsir Ibn Abbas: Az-Zumar, Ayah 57

أَوْ تَقُولَ لَوْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هَدَىٰنِى لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
Or [lest] it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."

Ibn Abbas Commentary

(Or should say) and that it will not say: (if Allah had but guided me) if Allah had showed me faith (I should have been among the dutiful) I would have been among those who believe in Allah's divine Oneness!

Narrated by It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to deliver the sermon leaning on a tree trunk. When he started to use the pulpit, he went to the pulpit, and the trunk made a sorrowful sound. So he came to it and embraced it, and it calmed down. He said:
