Tafsir Ibn Abbas: Az-Zukhruf, Ayah 76

وَمَا ظَلَمْنَٰهُمْ وَلَٰكِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.

Ibn Abbas Commentary

(We wronged them not) by punishing them, (but they it was who did the wrong) by adopting disbelief and idolatry.

Scholars offer complementary perspectives

And We never wronged them but they themselves were the wrongdoers.

We were refrained from following the bier, but it was not made absolute on us.

We were forbidden accompany the biers, but it was not stressed upon us.

We were forbidden to follow the bier, but it was not made absolute on us.
