سُورَةُ المَاعُونِ
Al-Maa'un (Almsgiving)
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
7 ayahs
أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ
Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?
فَذَٰلِكَ ٱلَّذِى يَدُعُّ ٱلْيَتِيمَ
For that is the one who drives away the orphan
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
And does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
فَوَيْلٌۭ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ
So woe to those who pray
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ
[But] who are heedless of their prayer -
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَآءُونَ
Those who make show [of their deeds]
وَيَمْنَعُونَ ٱلْمَاعُونَ
And withhold [simple] assistance.

Ayah 1

Have you seen him who denies the Judgement? the Requital and the Reckoning that is to say ‘Do you know who he is?’ If you do not know him then

Ayah 2

That is he read an implied huwa after the fā’ of fa-dhālika who repels the orphan that is to say who violently drives him away from what is his due

Ayah 3

and does not urge either himself or others to the feeding of the needy this was revealed regarding al-‘Āsī b. Wā’il or al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra.

Ayah 4

So woe to them who pray

Ayah 5

those who are heedless of their prayers neglectful delaying them from their appointed times

Ayah 6

those who make a pretence with prayers and otherwise

Ayah 7

and deny aid as insignificant as a needle a hatchet a cooking pot or a bowl.
