The Book of Fasting
Sahih

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it? They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) observed fast (on the day of 'Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed.
Narrated by Ibn'Abbas (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Medina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of 'Ashura. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to them:

Context

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) encounters Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashura and inquires about its significance. They explain that it commemorates the day Allah saved Moses and his people. The Prophet then emphasizes the Muslim connection to Moses, leading him to observe the fast himself and encourage others to do so. This illustrates the importance of historical events in shaping Islamic practices.

Modern Application

The observance of 'Ashura today can serve as a reminder of gratitude and reflection on historical struggles for justice and freedom. Muslims can use this day to connect with their heritage and express solidarity with those who face oppression.
