Sahih Muslim #2937

The Book of Pilgrimage
Sahih

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

I said to Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with them): People are of the view that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) moved quickly round the House and between al-Safa and al-Marwa, and (thus) it is Sunnah. He said: They told the truth and they told the lie.
Narrated by Abu Tufail reported:

Context

In this narration, Ibn Abbas discusses the practice of moving quickly during the Tawaf and between Safa and Marwah. He acknowledges that while this practice is considered Sunnah, it is not obligatory. This reflects the balance in Islamic teachings between tradition and understanding the spirit of the rituals.

Modern Application

For modern pilgrims, this hadith serves as a reminder that while certain practices are encouraged, the essence of the rituals lies in their intention and devotion rather than strict adherence to speed or formality.

Topics

This hadith is tagged with Hajj because it addresses the practices associated with the rituals of Tawaf and Sa'i during the pilgrimage.
