I reached him (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) while in the shade of the Ka`ba; he was saying, "They are the losers, by
the Lord of the Ka`ba! They are the losers, by the Lord of the Ka`ba!" I said (to myself ), "What is
wrong with me? Is anything improper detected in me? What is wrong with me? Then I sat beside him
and he kept on saying his statement. I could not remain quiet, and Allah knows in what sorrowful state
I was at that time. So I said, ' Who are they (the losers)? Let My father and mother be sacrificed for
you, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "They are the wealthy people, except the one who does like this and
like this and like this (i.e., spends of his wealth in Allah's Cause).
I asked my father, "Was the Verse:-- 'Say: (O Muhammad) Shall We tell you the greatest losers in
respect of their deeds?'(18.103) revealed regarding Al-Haruriyya?" He said, "No, but regarding the
Jews and the Christians, for the Jews disbelieved Muhammad and the Christians disbelieved in
Paradise and say that there are neither meals nor drinks therein. Al- Hururiyya are those people who
break their pledge to Allah after they have confirmed that they will fulfill it, and Sa`d used to call
them 'Al-Fasiqin (evildoers who forsake Allah's obedience).
"Should I not inform you about the people of Paradise: They are every humble and weak person, who if he were to make an Oath by Allah, He would fulfill it. Should I not inform you about the people of the Fire: They are every prideful, swaggering, ill-speaking person."
I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he was sitting under the shade of the Ka'ba. As he saw me he said: By the Lord of the Ka'ba, they are the losers. I came there till I sat and I could not stay (longer) and (then) stood up. I said: Messenger of Allah, let my father, be ransom for you, who are they (the losers)? He said: They are those having a huge amount of wealth except so and so and (those who spend their wealth generously on them whom they find in front of them, behind them and on their right side and on their left side) and they are a few. And no owner of camels, or cattle or goat and sheep, who does not pay Zakat (would be spared punishment) but these (camels, cattle, goats and sheep) would come on the Day of Resurrection wearing more flesh and would gore him with their horns and trample them with their hooves. And when the last one would pass away, the first one would return (to trample him) till judgment would be pronounced among people.
'Shall I not inform you of the best of you from your worst?'" He said: "They became silent, so he said that three times, then a man said: 'Of course, O Messenger of Allah! Inform us of the best among us from our worst.' He said: 'The best of you is the one whose goodness is hoped for, and people are safe from his evil. And the worst of you is he whose goodness is not hoped for, and people are not safe from his evil.'"
