فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ وَأَنفِقُوا۟ خَيْرًۭا لِّأَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
Fattaqul laaha mastat'tum wasma'oo wa atee'oo waanfiqoo khairal li anfusikum; wa many-yooqa shuha nafsihee fa-ulaaa'ika humul muflihoon
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

Scholars offer complementary perspectives
So fear God as far as you can — this abrogates His saying Fear God as He should be feared Q. 3102 — and listen to what you have been enjoined to listening disposed to accept and obey and expend in obedience to Him; that is better for your souls khayran li-anfusikum is the predicate of an implied yakun ‘that is’ and the response to the imperative. And whoever is shielded from the avarice of his own soul such are the successful the winners.

It has been related that 'Umar bin
Al-Khattäb said: "Reckon with
yourselves before you are reckoned
with, and prepare for the Greatest
Inquisition. The reckoning of the
Day of Judgement is only light for
the one who reckoned with himself
in the world."
And, it has been related that
Maimun bin Mihran said: "The
slave (of Allah) will not be a Taqi
until he has reckoned himself, just
as he would account for where his
business partner got his food and
clothing."
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: What is evil in a man are alarming niggardliness and unrestrained cowardice.
