Qaalal mala ul lazeenas takbaroo min qawmihee lanukhrijannaka yaa Shu'aibu wallazeena aamanoo ma'aka min qaryatinaaa aw lata'oo dunna fee millatinaa; qaala awa law kunnaa kaariheen
Said the eminent ones who were arrogant among his people, "We will surely evict you, O Shu'ayb, and those who have believed with you from our city, or you must return to our religion." He said, "Even if we were unwilling?"
Tafsir
Scholars offer complementary perspectives
Said the council of those of his people who were disdainful of believing ‘Surely we will expel you O Shu‘ayb and those who believe with you from our city unless you return to our creed’ our religion the plural person predominates over the singular in their address to Shu‘ayb because Shu‘ayb was never part of their religious community; and so in the same plural way he responded He said ‘What should we return to it even though we are averse to it? the interrogative is meant as a disavowal.

I heard Sa`id bin Zaid bin `Amr bin Nufail saying in the mosque of Al-Kufa. "By Allah, I have seen
myself tied and forced by `Umar to leave Islam before `Umar himself embraced Islam. And if the
mountain of Uhud could move from its place for the evil which you people have done to `Uthman,
then it would have the right to move from its place."
I heard Sa`id bin Zaid saying to the people, "If you but saw me and `Umar's sister tied and forced by
`Umar to leave Islam while he was not yet a Muslim. And if the mountain of Uhud could move from
its place for the evil which you people have done to `Uthman, it would have the right to do that."
I heard from Bara' a similar tradition except that he said:" These people (the Meccans) rebelled against us."
When the people of Khaibar dislocated `Abdullah bin `Umar's hands and feet, `Umar got up
delivering a sermon saying, "No doubt, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) made a contract with the Jews concerning
their properties, and said to them, 'We allow you (to stand in your land) as long as Allah allows you.'
Now `Abdullah bin `Umar went to his land and was attacked at night, and his hands and feet were
dislocated, and as we have no enemies there except those Jews, they are our enemies and the only
people whom we suspect, I have made up my mind to exile them." When `Umar decided to carry out
his decision, a son of Abu Al-Haqiq's came and addressed `Umar, "O chief of the believers, will you
exile us although Muhammad allowed us to stay at our places, and made a contract with us about our
properties, and accepted the condition of our residence in our land?" `Umar said, "Do you think that I
have forgotten the statement of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), i.e.: What will your condition be when you are
expelled from Khaibar and your camel will be carrying you night after night?" The Jew replied, "That
was joke from Abul-Qasim." `Umar said, "O the enemy of Allah! You are telling a lie." `Umar then
drove them out and paid them the price of their properties in the form of fruits, money, camel saddles
and ropes, etc."
I heard Sa`id bin Zaid saying, "I have seen myself tied and forced by `Umar to leave Islam (Before
`Umar himself embraced Islam). And if the mountain of Uhud were to collapse for the evil which you
people had done to `Uthman, then Uhud would have the right to do so." (See Hadith No. 202, Vol. 5)

We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
And We have certainly revealed to you verses [which are] clear proofs, and no one would deny them except the defiantly disobedient.
Indeed, We have sent you, [O Muhammad], with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner, and you will not be asked about the companions of Hellfire.
Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.
Just as We have sent among you a messenger from yourselves reciting to you Our verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book and wisdom and teaching you that which you did not know.
