وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
Wa izaa kaaloohum aw wazanoohum yukhsiroon
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.

Those people who used to buy foodstuff at random (without weighing or measuring it) were beaten in
the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) if they sold it at the very place where they had bought it, till they
carried it to their dwelling places.
"When the Prophet (ﷺ) came to Al-Madinah, they were the worst people in weights and measures. Then Allah, Glorious is He revealed: "Woe to the Mutaffifun (those who give less in measure and weight)", and they were fair in weights and measures after that.
"The measure (to be used) is the
measure of the people of Al-Madinah, and the weight (to be used) is the weight of the people of Makkah."
I saw the people buy foodstuff randomly (i.e. blindly without measuring it) in the lifetime of Allah's
Apostle and they were punished (by beating), if they tried to sell it before carrying it to their own
houses.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: If anyone buys grain, he should not sell it until he measures it. Abu Bakr added in his version: I asked Ibn 'Abbas: Why ? He replied: Do you not see that they sell (grain) for gold, but the grain is still with the seller.
