Tafsir Al-Jalalayn: Yaseen, Ayah 74
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةًۭ لَّعَلَّهُمْ يُنصَرُونَ
But they have taken besides Allah [false] deities that perhaps they would be helped.

Scholars offer complementary perspectives
(And they have) and the disbelievers of Mecca worshipped ((other) gods) idols (beside Allah, in order that they may be helped) so that they may save them from Allah's punishment.
Al-Jalalayn Commentary
And they have taken besides God in other words other than Him other gods idols which they worship that perhaps they might be helped protected against God’s chastisement by their gods’ interceding for them as they are wont to claim.
