A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet (and when they were admitted) they said, "As- Samu 'Alaika (Death be upon you)." I said (to them), "But death and the curse of Allah be upon you!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O `Aisha! Allah is kind and lenient and likes that one should be kind and lenient in all matters." I said, "Haven't you heard what they said?" He said, "I said (to them), 'Wa 'Alaikum (and upon you).
Narrated by Narrated `Aisha:

Context

In this hadith, `Aisha narrates an incident where a group of Jews greeted the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) with a phrase wishing death upon him. In response, she reacted strongly, but the Prophet (ﷺ) advised her to respond with kindness and gentleness. This situation highlights the importance of maintaining a respectful demeanor, even in the face of hostility, and emphasizes Allah's love for gentleness in all matters.

Modern Application

In today's interactions, especially in challenging situations, responding with kindness can diffuse tension and foster understanding. This principle encourages individuals to remain calm and composed, promoting a more peaceful dialogue rather than escalating conflicts.

Topics

This hadith is tagged with Prophetic Conduct and Respectful Communication because it illustrates the Prophet's (ﷺ) emphasis on responding to negativity with kindness and maintaining a respectful demeanor.
