Sunan Abu Dawud #201

Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah)
Sahih

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، وَدَاوُدُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ، أَنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ أُقِيمَتْ صَلاَةُ الْعِشَاءِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي حَاجَةً ‏.‏ فَقَامَ يُنَاجِيهِ حَتَّى نَعَسَ الْقَوْمُ أَوْ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِهِمْ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ وُضُوءًا ‏.‏
(The people) stood up for the night prayer and a man stood up and spoke forth: Messenger of Allah, I have to say something to you. He (the Prophet) entered into secret conversation with him, till the people or some of the people dozed off, ad then he led them in prayer. He (Thabit al-Bunani) did not mention ablution.
Narrated by Anas b. Malik reported:

Context

Anas b. Malik narrates an incident where a man approached the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) during the night prayer to discuss a personal matter, causing some attendees to doze off. The Prophet continued the conversation and later led the prayer without mentioning the need for ablution. This illustrates the balance between personal needs and communal worship.

Modern Application

In daily salah, this teaches us that while personal matters may arise, they should be handled with discretion and respect for the collective prayer experience. It encourages open communication while being mindful of communal responsibilities.

فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَٱذْكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قِيَٰمًۭا وَقُعُودًۭا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِكُمْ ۚ فَإِذَا ٱطْمَأْنَنتُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَٰبًۭا مَّوْقُوتًۭا
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.
