وَإِنِّى خِفْتُ ٱلْمَوَٰلِىَ مِن وَرَآءِى وَكَانَتِ ٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرًۭا فَهَبْ لِى مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّۭا
Wa innee khiftul mawaa liya minw waraaa'ee wa kaana tim ra atee 'aairan fahab lee mil ladunka waliyyaa
And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir

And truly I fear my kinsfolk namely those who will succeed me as closest after me in kinship such as my paternal cousins after me that is after my death I fear for the religion lest they forsake it as You have witnessed in the case of the Children of Israel in the way that they changed their religion and my wife is barren she does not conceive. So grant me from Yourself a successor a son

not leaving behind any problem more difficult than the one who
leaves
behind an heir. I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he
never
spoke so harshly to me about anything as he spoke to me about
this. He
jabbed his finger into my side or my chest and said: ‘O
‘Umar,
sufficient for you is the Verse that was revealed in summer,
at the
end of Surat An-Nisa’.”
I was present with my father when he was wounded. People praised him and said: May God give you a noble recompense! He said: I am hopeful (of God's mercy) as well as afraid (of His wrath) People said: Appoint anyone as your successor. He said: Should I carry the burden of conducting your affairs in my life as well as in my death? (So far as Caliphate is concerned) I wish I could acquit myself (before the Almighty) in a way that there is neither anything to my credit nor anything to my discredit. If I would appoint my successor, (I would because) one better than me did so. (He meant Abu Bakr.) If I would leave You alone, (I would do so because) one better than me, i. e. the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), did so. 'Abdullah says: When he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) I understood that he would not appoint anyone as Caliph.
The Prophet (ﷺ) came to me while I was ill. He performed ablution and threw the remaining water on me
(or said, "Pour it on him) " When I came to my senses I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I have no son or
father to be my heir, so how will be my inheritance?" Then the Verse of inheritance was revealed.
I said: Messenger of Allah! tell me if a son is born to me after your death, may I give him your name and your kunyah? He replied: Yes. The transmitter Abu Bakr did not mention the words "I said". Instead, he said: 'Ali said to the Prophet (ﷺ).
“I am the heir of the one who has no heir, and I will pay blood money on his behalf and inherit from him, and the maternal uncle is the heir of the one who has no heir; he pays the blood money on his behalf and inherits from him.'”
