سُورَةُ النَّجۡمِ
An-Najm (The Star)
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
9 ayahs
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ
Have you seen the one who turned away
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًۭا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ
And gave a little and [then] refrained?
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ
And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌۭ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ
And that his effort is going to be seen -
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ
Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense

Ayah 38

that no burdened soul shall bear the burden of another an ‘that’ has been softened in place of the hardened form in other words no soul shall bear responsibility for the sins of another;

and that wa-an to be understood as wa-annahu man shall have only what he himself strives for of good deeds and so he shall not have anything of the reward for good deeds striven for by another;

and that his endeavour will be seen it will be inspected in the Hereafter

then he will be rewarded for it with the fullest reward the most perfect reward one may say jazaytuhu sa‘yahu or jazaytuhu bi-sa‘yihi to mean the same thing

Narrated by The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Abu Bakr b. 'Adb al-Rahman b. al-Harith b. Hisham from Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) through a different chain of narrators to the same effect as narrated by Malik. This version adds:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Abraham did his circumcision with an adze* at the age of eighty." Narrated Abu Az-Zinad: (as above) With an adze*. * a type of cured blade axe.

Narrated by The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Ibn 'Abbas through a different chain of narrators. In this version there is no mention of the word qasam (oath). It has the words:
