Sahih

The Arabic includes the chain of narration (sanad) and the collector's commentary; the English translation shows the Prophet's words only.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، بِمَعْنَاهُ قَالَ ‏ "‏ عَرِّفْهَا حَوْلاً ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ ثَلاَثَ مِرَارٍ قَالَ فَلاَ أَدْرِي قَالَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ فِي سَنَةٍ أَوْ فِي ثَلاَثِ سِنِينَ ‏.‏
He said : Make it known for a year. He said this three times. He said: I do not know whether he said “for a year” or “for three years”.
Narrated by The aforesaid tradition has also been transmitted by Shu’bah through a different chain of narrators to the same effect. The version goes :
