This hadith from Sunan an-Nasa'i (Book of The Book of Cutting off the Hand of the Thief), narrated by 'Aishah, the mother of the believers, narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:, states: ""The hand (of the thief) is not to be cut off for a shield.""

The Book of Cutting off the Hand of the Thief

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بَحْرٍ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُبَارَكُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عِكْرِمَةُ، أَنَّ امْرَأَةً، أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَخْبَرَتْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ تُقْطَعُ الْيَدُ فِي الْمِجَنِّ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

لَئِنۢ بَسَطتَ إِلَىَّ يَدَكَ لِتَقْتُلَنِى مَآ أَنَا۠ بِبَاسِطٍۢ يَدِىَ إِلَيْكَ لِأَقْتُلَكَ ۖ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ ٱللَّهَ رَبَّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

If you should raise your hand against me to kill me - I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.

سُورَةُ الشُّعَرَاءِ

Ash-Shu'araa (The Poets)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1 ayah

وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

And we are not to be punished."

سُورَةُ الأَنفَالِ

Al-Anfaal (The Spoils of War)

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّٰمٍۢ لِّلْعَبِيدِ

That is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allah is not ever unjust to His servants."
