If la-in the lām is for oaths the hypocrites do not desist from their hypocrisy and likewise those in whose hearts is a sickness in their urge to fornicate as well as the scaremongers in the city who alarm the believers by saying to them things like ‘Your enemy is here and your raiding parties have been massacred!’ or they say to them ‘They have been defeated!’. Assuredly We will urge you to take action against them We will give you sway over them then they will not be your neighbours they will not dwell near you in it except for a little while after which they will depart.

When the Prophet (ﷺ) went out for (the battle of) Uhud, some of his companions (hypocrites) returned (home). A party of the believers remarked that they would kill those (hypocrites) who had returned, but another party said that they would not kill them. So, this Divine Inspiration was revealed: "Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties concerning the hypocrites." (4.88) The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Medina expels the bad persons from it, as fire expels the impurities of iron."

Sunan Ibn Majah #2850It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever wishes bad upon the people of Al-Madinah, Allah will cause him to melt as salt melts in water.”

Sahih Muslim #3236Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Abul-Qasim (Muhammad, may peace be upon him) said:Sahih

He who intends to do harm to the people of this city (that is, Medina), Allah would efface him as salt is dissolved in water.

Sahih Muslim #3197'Amir b. Sa'd b. Abu Waqqas reported on the authority of his father (Allah be pleased with him) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, and then the (above-mentioned) hadith was narrated with this addition:Sahih

" None should nurse ill-will towards the people of Medina, or Allah will melt him in fire like the melting of lead or the dissolution of salt in water.

Sahih Muslim #3230Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:Sahih

A time will come for the people (of Medina) when a man will invite his cousin and any other near relation: Come (and settle) at (a place) where living is cheap, come to where there is plenty, but Medina will be better for them; would they know it! By Him in Whose Hand is my life, none amongst them would go out (of the city) with a dislike for it, but Allah would make his successor in it someone better than be. Behold. Medina is like furnace which eliminates from it the impurities. And the Last Hour will not come until Medina banishes its evils just as a furnace eliminates the impurities of iron.
