so that God may chastise li-yu‘adhdhiba the lām therein is semantically connected to ‘aradnā ‘We offered’ which resulted in ‘Adam’s undertaking’ the hypocrites men and women and the idolaters men and women those who forsake the Trust and that God may relent to the believing men and believing women who fulfil the Trust. And God is Forgiving to believers Merciful to them.

The verse "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite side or exile from the land...most merciful" was revealed about polytheists. If any of them repents before they are arrested, it does not prevent from inflicting on him the prescribed punishment which he deserves.

When the order of compulsory fasting of Ramadan was revealed, the people did not have sexual relations with their wives for the whole month of Ramadan, but some men cheated themselves (by violating that restriction).
