سُورَةُ الشَّمۡسِ
Ash-Shams (The Sun)
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
10 ayahs
وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا
By the sun and its brightness
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا
And [by] the moon when it follows it
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا
And [by] the day when it displays it
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا
And [by] the night when it covers it
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا
And [by] the sky and He who constructed it
وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا
And [by] the earth and He who spread it
وَنَفْسٍۢ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
He has succeeded who purifies it,
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].

Ayah 1

By the sun and her morning light

Ayah 2

and by the moon when it follows her rising after she has set

Ayah 3

and by the day when it reveals her as it rises high

Ayah 4

and by the night when it enshrouds her covering her up with its darkness idhā ‘when’ in all three instances is an absolute adverbial operated by the verbal action of the oath.

Ayah 5

By the heaven and the One Who built it

Ayah 6

and by the earth and the One Who spread it laid out flat.

Ayah 7

and by the soul that is to say by all souls and the One Who proportioned it in its created form mā in all three instances relates to the verbal action or functions as man ‘the one who’

Ayah 8

and inspired to discern its vices and piety He pointed out to it the path of good and that of evil the placing of taqwā ‘piety’ second takes into account the rhyme endings of the verses; the response ...

Ayah 9

Successful indeed qad the lām of laqad ‘indeed’ has been omitted from it for the sake of brevity will be the one who purifies it purges it of sins

Ayah 10

and he will indeed have failed he who eclipses it he who obscures it with acts of disobedience dassāhā is actually dassasahā but the second sīn has been replaced with an alif for phonetic ease.

“He has succeeded who is guided to Islam and is granted sufficient provision and is content with it.”

Narrated by It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin ‘As that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

He Is successful who has accepted Islam, who has been provided with sufficient for his want and been made contented by Allah with what He has given him.

Narrated by 'Amr b. al-'As reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite 'By the sun and its brightness' and similar surahs in Isha'.

Narrated by It was narrated from Abdullah bin Buraidah, from his father, that:

When the wings of the night (spread) or it is night, restrain your children (from going out), for the Satan is abroad at that time, and when a part of the night is passed, free them and shut the doors...

Narrated by Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said:

The moon was cleft asunder while we were in the company of the Prophet, and it became two parts. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, Witness, witness (this miracle).
