Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah, "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.
Tafsir
Scholars largely agree on this ayah
The following was revealed regarding the hypocrites who stayed behind away from the campaign Had it — that to which you summon them — been a near easily acquired gain a transient pleasure of this world and an easy journey of moderate length they would have followed you seeking spoils; but the distance the hardship was too great for them and so they stayed behind. Still they will swear by God when you return to them saying ‘Had we been able to go forth we would have gone forth with you’ destroying their souls by swearing false oaths and God knows that they truly are liars in this saying of theirs.

We went out with the Prophet (ﷺ) : on a journey and the people suffered from lack of provisions. So
`Abdullah bin Ubai said to his companions, "Don't spend on those who are with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), that
they may disperse and go away from him." He also said, "If we return to Medina, surely, the more

for `Abdullah bin Ubai and asked him, but `Abdullah bin Ubai swore that he did not say so. The
people said, "Zaid told a lie to 'Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." What they said distressed me very much. Later Allah
revealed the confirmation of my statement in his saying:--
'(When the hypocrites come to you.' (63.1) So the Prophet (ﷺ) called them that they might ask Allah to
forgive them, but they turned their heads aside. (Concerning Allah's saying: 'Pieces of wood propped

"Were it not that it would be too difficult for my Ummah, I would not have stayed behind from any expedition. But they could not find mounts, and I could not find any mounts for them, and it would be too hard for them to stay behind when I went out. And I wish that I could be killed in the cause of Allah, then brought back to life, then killed, then brought back to life, then killed," three times.
